Who are The Beatles?

Basic Description

The Beatles are an English Rock band that rose to fame in the 1960s with their upbeat, fresh sound and lyrics of love. You've probably heard the term 'Beatlemania' before, it refers to the phenomenon of Beatles' fans absolutely fucking freaking out over them. In the mid 1960's, they started to get into ~experimental drugs~ like ~MARIJUANNA~ and ~LSD~. Their albums began to make a shift around this time. A lot of people I've talked to hear the shift around "Rubber Soul", which marked the start of their little experimental phase. That phrasing makes it sounds like I don't like it, but those are some of my favorite albums of theirs! "Revolver" is my favorite Beatles album, actually. Due to infighting in the band, multiple instances happened where they almost broke up. I'm pretty sure each of the members have walked out at least once. In 1969, they recorded their final songs for the albums "Abbey Road" and "Let It Be", and later it was announced The Beatles broke up. After this, each member continued their own solo careers, gaining their own amounts of praise in their own personal projects. In 1980, John Lennon passed away due to assasination by a crazed fan in New York City. Paul, George and Ringo got together sometime in the 90s to try and rerecord one of John's old songs, from what I remember. I haven't watched the show it comes from. In 2001, George Harrison passed after a battle with lung cancer. In the years since Paul and George's deaths, there have been multiple tributes to them all over the world. In 2023, The Beatles released their last single, "Now and Then". This is the song that Paul, George and Ringo were trying to remaster and record of John's. With AI technology restoring the vocals, they were able to finally release it. The song won a Grammy this year (2025). I cried when I read they won a Grammy, of course. Despite Beatlemania obviously not being at it's peak anymore, The Beatles still has dedicated fans all over the world. Including me!!

Autistic Rambling Description

The Beatles are one of the most iconic rock bands of the 20th century. The band was originally formed in 1956 by a teenage John Lennon under the name "The Quarrymen". Over the next couple years, Paul McCartney saw The Quarrymen at a garden show, and shortly after joined the band. Paul then invited his friend George Harrison to watch the band, and after some trouble with John thinking George was too young to join (He was 15 at the time, John was 17 and Paul was 16), George eventually joined as well. By 1959, the three of them were performing as an act called Johnny And The Moondogs. In 1960, Stuart Sutcliffe (a friend of John) and Pete Best (a drummer who auditioned) both ended up joining. They had a couple name changes before landing on The Beatles- Beatals, Silver Beetles, The Silver Beatles, then finally just The Beatles. The lineup was John and Paul on rhythm guitar, George on lead guitar, Stuart on bass and Pete on drums. With this lineup, they traveled to Hamburg to do some shows. A bunch of stuff happened in Hamburg- George got reported for being underage and was to be deported from Hamburg, Paul and Pete got arrested for setting a condom on fire and then they got deported, John left Hamburg and Stuart decided to stay for a bit.

Despite the issues, they ended up getting a residency in Hamburg..somehow. In 1961, Stuart decided to cut his hair in the iconic style that The Beatles all later adopted during the Beatlemania years. Later, Stuart decided to leave the band, so Paul took over the bass role. As they completed their second residency in Hamburg and returned to Liverpool, they began to gain increasing popularity. On a fateful night in 1961, Brian Epstein was one of their viewers in the audience. Brian later said that he thought they were fresh, and had "a star quality". In the beginning of 1962, The Beatles appointed Brian Epstein as their manager. In the following months, Brian worked to free The Beatles from their current contract by negotiating an early release for one last recording in Hamburg. On their way back to Germany, they were given the awful news of Stuart Sutcliffe's death. Although devastated by the loss of their friend, they continued to be strong and move forward towards their dreams. Brian pitched the band to a couple labels, which rejected them, claiming "guitar bands are on the way out". However, The Beatles were able to get signed to EMI's Parlophone Label by George Martin, a music producer.

The Beatles' first recording session at EMI started in June of 1962. George Martin complained about Pete Best's drumming, and suggested they replace him for the album. John, Paul and George however had already been considering dismissing Pete from the band, so this worked out perfectly. Then, our lord and savior Ringo Starr left Rory Storm and The Hurricanes (the band he was in before the beatles) to join The Beatles' lineup in August of 1962. Thus, our Fab Four was finally born!!! For some reason George Martin was still dissatisfied with Ringo's drumming on 'Love Me Do', so he hired another drummer and stuck ringo on the tambourine. Wtf. Anyway, the recording with Ringo got chosen as their first single to be released, even though George Martin later decided to just release the one with Ringo on tambourine. Love Me Do was released in early October of 1962 and peaked at number 17 on the charts. Later that month, they made their first television debut on a regional news program called "People and Places". During this, they continued to record albums for their first album which was to be released in 1963. Still using that other drummer for some songs, rip Ringo. During the recording of their song 'Please Please Me', George Martin suggested they sped up the tempo, which they obliged because he was like the producer. After they played it, Martin predicted; "You've just made your first number one." The Beatles finished their final residency in Hamburg in December of 1962, and in the beginning of 1963 made a choice to include all four members' vocals on the tracks, which in my opinion was smart as hell. I love Octopus' Garden. ANYWAY.

The Beatles released 'Please Please Me' as their next single due to the moderate success of 'Love Me Do'. It was released two months ahead of their first album's release, and as George Martin predicted- HIT NUMBER ONE ON THE MOTHAFUCKIN CHARTS!!! except for Record Retailer it was at number two... which, okay, be different i guess. Then, on March 22nd, 1963, "Please Please Me" was released as The Beatles' debut album!!!

Of course, after that, they blew up in the UK. With their catchy music and absolutely lovable personalities, The Beatles quickly gained a fanbase. They even toured the UK three times in the beginning of the year. In October of 1963, The Beatles' appeared on the top variety show in the UK at the time- "Sunday Night at the London Palladium". Their performance was watched by OVER 15 MILLION PEOPLE. Which in 1963, was quite a lot of people watching a live performance at the same time. "Please Please Me" stayed at the top of the charts, until it was DETHRONED by The Beatles' NEXT album, "With The Beatles". It held the top spot for 21 weeks, and stayed on the charts for 40 weeks. Gahddamn! EMI actually did a little switcharoo and released the album BEFORE their single that was supposed to come out, and intentionally excluded it from the album, in a plot to get the single more attention. This ended up working out pretty good because after the single released in the UK, a radio station in Washington DC, WWDC, obtained a copy of it and played it on their station. That song was 'I Want to Hold Your Hand', and this was the beginning of Beatlemania. Capitol released the single for American audiences THREE WEEKS EARLY and it quickly sold ONE MILLION FRICKING COPIES.

The Beatles arrived on American soil on February 7, 1964. They departed Heathrow Airport being sent off by screaming fans, and arrived at the John F. Kennedy Airport being welcomed by screaming fans. That day, they gave their famous performance on "The Ed Sullivan Show", which was watched by approx. 73 million viewers. That's insane, in one year the amount of people watching them QUADRUPLED. At their first US concert, according to the article about them I'm reading to keep my facts straight: Beatlemania erupted. And those two words together terrify me because i can only imagine. I know the title of this site is Beatlemania Station but some of those fangirls back in the day were honestly wack man. For the record I would not piss myself at a Beatles show. Anyhoot, The Beatles were in America while the country was still mourning the loss of JFK, and I personally think that they grew such a large fanbase especially with the youth because they re-ignited a sense of joy and hope that was lost in the wake of JFK's death. Sure, they probably would have gotten popular even if JFK wasn't assasinated, but them coming to America and pulling a lot of people out of their dark times by spreading love with their music probably helped a lot.

Woosh. That was a lot. I know I only went until 1964, but my rambling has probably gone on for too long. There's so much more I can talk about with The Beatles, but I feel like that covers the basics of who they are, how they formed and how they rose to fame as fast as they did. I'll probably cover certain years more in depth as I cover the members and their albums individually. Any opinions I express on this page about The Beatles, their history, the members or anyone involved with them, are completely mine and I in no way expect you to agree with my opinions! The Beatles have been my special interest for over 4 years now, and I just wanted somewhere to talk about them.
